This may sound like a very simple answer to a dirty stylus. Remove the stylus and touch the tip gently with scotch tape. We used this method in the RCA lab to kept the diamonds clean.

The early CED had problem with a contamination in the carbon black which makes the plastic conductive. This contamination was eliminated that would cause the disc to age.

You may want to try scotch tap carefully on the end of the stylus. We found that it remove debris very well and regenerated a stylus in many cases.
