Assuming I didnt make a mistake or get scammed on eBay, I should have the service manual for the STA-300 stereo audio adapter coming in the mail. Would anyone be interested in replicas (DIY or prebuilt), schematics, or maybe even an open source redesign of the accessory? _________________ Glitchy Mario

Mario:
Although this part isn't something that I need, I think it would be a neat idea to have it available for the collectors who own this particular CED player. Hopefully, you can get the replicas to work just as well as the old adapters. I'm guessing that the original part is hard to find today. Good luck! _________________ Let RCA turn your television into Selectavision! |

Never mind, the seller never sent it. I got a refund, but no manual _________________ Glitchy Mario

If I can just get pictures of the case and the internals, I can attempt to reverse engineer it and create a diagram. _________________ Glitchy Mario

Thanks to Josh Gibson, the manual for the STA-300 is available! Also, thanks to UnusualPositioning for telling me about it! (Link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hYKFwGebgEDBUcxFMv4T8EaICTrSZZH5/view?usp=sharing)
Looking at the schematic, it’s tough to say if I could make one. Like many things CED electronics related, the parts are old, and some chips may be impossible to find without going through donor boards, or relying on limited stock. I’d want this to be in a way that’s easy and cheap for anyone to make and hopefully use off the shelf part.
From a semi-quick skim of the manual, it appears to receive the RF signal directly from the disc, and it decodes the audio like the player would. If that’s correct, it may not be possible, because as far as I can find, the DAXI code structure hasn’t been documented, thusly it may not be able to get it to sync.
There may be replacement or equivalent parts, or it may not even use the DAXI, but for now, I have to do some heavier research. I really hope this is possible… _________________ Glitchy Mario

This seems very similar to the Doomsday Project that was being discussed on the Facebook page. Apparently they have made a device for Laserdisc and VHS that connect directly to the RF output on the player and records the information directly off a disc rather than rely on an output source. It provides a cleaner signal and can record all the information off the disc at one time and store it in a data file. The data file can then be rendered with software to provide a copy of the disc. It's a pretty great idea actually and would be amazing if someone could do this with CED.
But as for a stereo adapter, I don't think you would need to the daxi information for it. The audio demodulator IC is available, and if you could create a stereo board like the SGT250 uses then it could easily be contained in a separate box and hooked up to a mono player, and then output stereo sound. It's probably quite a bit more technical then I make it sound but someone smarter than me could figure that out. |

I’ve heard of that and would absolutely love a project like that for the CED!

That’s probably correct. It’s been a while since I’ve researched the CED, and apparently forgot all about how both the CED and how analog video works lol. I thought the DAXI did more than it does.
I’m gonna see if I can at least start making a 1:1 copy of the board to see what all is involved. I’ve never done something like this, and I learn best when I have a completed project to look forward to, so I may be a little slow. Wish me luck! _________________ Glitchy Mario

Update: Haven't really been working on this because of life stuff and not knowing much about using Ki-Cad, but I'm trying to get something done. I have no clue if I'm doing anything correctly, but I'm trying to copy it as close as I can.
So far, the only things I am having issues with are the band pass filters (CP201/CP202) where I don't know the footprint/correct symbol for, and the FM Detector ICs (IC201/IC202) which I also do not know the footprint/symbol for. I also cannot find this chip new-old-stock or used (As far as I can tell), meaning they must be sourced from the motherboards of Hitachi CED systems.
This google drive has my latest progress of the schematic. if anyone wants to try and work on it. If you do work on it, Please share it, and I can merge your progress to have the most up-to-date version: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1iiJDh8XVPALmgRcwhtaexXyS4MLzb8yp?usp=sharing
Progress as of 8/30/2025:
