Hey collectors. Whenever I score something cool, something rare, or different, I like to create a new thread to share it.

This time it's the ever illusive Box Set - The Championship Collection - Rocky 1, 2 & 3!!!

I've never even seen photos of this box set before. Check this out.

Believe it or not, this was buried in an ebay listing! It was posted like super early, last Sunday and I just happened to search for "Rocky box set CED Videodisc" a few days ago (I've been doing that, like once a month or two just hoping lol) well this time it payed off! I was lucky enough and it came up, way down the page in related listings. I couldn't believe my eyes.

It was posted with a buy it now for under 30 bucks! The seller had no clue what he had, nor that he should have listed it with CED in the title and that he should have auctioned it off!..........Sooooooooooo lucky!

Let this be a reminder collectors, to keep searching for those illusive rare titles! You just never know! We have to remember, 99.9% of sellers, have little to no clue about this format, nor how extremely, insanely rare some of this stuff is.

When I was a little boy in the 80's. My grandparents handed me down their CED player that me, my siblings and my cousins used to watch when we used to spend the night at their house. We didn't watch these movies then, but once they gave me their CED player, the 3 Rocky movies came with it and man, did I did ware those discs out! I watched all 3 movies, over and over and over again. Loved them! Some of my favorite movies to this day.

Scoring this Box set, I feel like Rocky did when he took down Apollo Creed!

YO COLLECTORS, I DID IT!!!!!

Cool

Prices for the same item can vary widely at eBay:
The title and description have a bearing on price, as well as how many people are competing to win the auction. For example, the highest price I have ever seen a consumer retail CED title go for on eBay was $211.00 for the "Rocky Championship Collection." This took place in 1998, not long after I posted a message to CED Digest Vol. 2 No. 30 about this title. This is an example of a bidding competition between collectors (probably for just the box in this case) and is not indicative of the price the item might sell for in a set price sale. I got this same title about a year later for the minimum bid of $9.99 as the seller neglected to mention that his auction for Rocky I, II, and III also included the discs in a box, and since then I've seen this title go for $20 - $30, when it's clear the discs do come in the Rocky box.

Using an inflation calculator, it looks like $211.00 of 1998's money is equivalent to $ $407.17 of 2024's money.
I scored it for about $30 bucks!!! I stole this sucker! Very Happy

Subject: Wanted: Rocky Championship Collection Box and Poster

Fellow CED Collectors:

I'm looking for the Rocky Championship Collection box as well as the poster of
Rocky that came packaged inside. This boxed set consists of the RCA releases of
Rocky I, II, and III which are identical to the discs RCA sold individually. I
already have these three titles, hence my interest in just the box, although
I'll buy or trade for the complete set just to get the box (email me for my
trade list).
The story behind this boxed set is a rather interesting one. RCA pressed vast
quantities of monaural Rocky I's for the CED intro in 1981, and also pressed a
lot of monaural Rocky II's. CBS came along and released Rocky I and II in
stereo, leaving RCA stuck with their now undesirable mono inventory. In a
classic example of miscommunication, both RCA and CBS released stereo versions
of Rocky III at almost the same time, resulting in another inventory surplus.
So the release of this boxed set was a means for RCA to eliminate their excess
inventory of these three titles. Rocky IV also exists on CED as a rare 1986
release. Although this is a CBS/Fox title, it was actually pressed by RCA, as
the CBS pressing plant had been closed for some time when it was released.

Tom, (or anyone else who happens to know) if you happen upon this thread, could you tell me if you verified that a poster came in this box set and if so, what poster it is?

Update Jan 5/2025. I upgraded this box set with another one! A lot more pricey but a lot better condition too. Rocky 1 and 2 are still sealed and it included this posterbook:

This was previously owned by the late James R. Opel of Indiana (1938-2019) who retired from RCA as a national accounts manager. I payed $165 for this one.
